    1. Pressure port (P): Connected to the compressed air supply.
    2. Exhaust ports (A and B): Used for exhaust air when the valve is actuated.
    3. Two additional ports (often labeled A and B): These are used to control the flow to actuators, such as cylinders.
  • 2: The number of positions or states the valve can have. A 5/2 valve has two positions:

    • Position 1 (rest position): In this position, one of the actuator ports is connected to the pressure port (P), and the other actuator port is connected to an exhaust port (usually the exhaust port A or B).
    • Position 2 (actuated position): When the valve is switched, the connections between the ports change, allowing air to flow in the opposite direction to control the actuator differently.

Function of a 5/2 Way Pneumatic Valve:

  • The 5/2 valve is commonly used to control double-acting cylinders (where air pressure is applied alternately to both sides of the piston).
  • Position 1: Air flows into one side of the cylinder, causing the piston to move in one direction.
  • Position 2: Air flows into the opposite side of the cylinder, moving the piston in the opposite direction.

Types of Actuation:

  • Manual: The valve is actuated by hand (e.g., with a lever or pushbutton).
  • Electrical (Solenoid Operated): The valve is actuated by an electrical solenoid, which is a coil that moves the valve when energized.
  • Pneumatic: Some valves are actuated by air pressure itself, using a pilot signal to shift the valve.
  • Mechanical: These valves can also be actuated by mechanical means like a spring or cam.

Applications:

  • Cylinders: Used to control double-acting cylinders in machines, robotics, automation, and other applications where air pressure is needed to move or position mechanical parts.
  • Automation Systems: Common in industrial automation systems to control the movement of robotic arms, conveyor belts, and other mechanical parts that require alternating air pressure for motion.
